Welcome to the World of Samba
One of the most fascinating things about samba is its refusal to be narrowly defined.
Samba takes on many different shapes, sounds and flavors in different parts of Brazil. From the Samba de Roda practiced by the Sisters of the Good Death the Reconcavo Baiano to the Samba Reggae performed by Afro Brazilian drummers in Salvador, to the Samba no Pé performed by passistas in the carnival parades of major cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, samba is a richly diverse genre of dance and music.
Our retreat introduces foreign samba students to the broad spectrum of cultural expressions that compose the framework of Brazilian Samba with a focus on technical training in Samba no Pé and Samba de Gafieira. This multi-site excursion takes place in Bahia and Rio de Janeiro.
